Good day Mr. Suzuki,

I did my research on the causes and effects of global warming. I care about global warming and I support your work. In my home city of Ottawa I see people cutting down trees for profit. I would like to introduce the summary of my research paper. I hope you enjoy reading mine.

Signs of global warming continue to appear all over the world, including in Canada.

Global temperatures are rising because of Greenhouse gas emissions caused by the burning of fossil fuels, such as coal, oil and gasoline. Greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide trap more of the sun’s heat, therefore causing average temperatures to rise.

The warming of the planet is creating adverse effects. The polar ice caps are melting at an alarming rate, causing sea level to rise. Higher sea levels cause coastal flooding, which can be disastrous for people in low-lying areas. Glaciers are also melting rapidly, which could mean a lack of drinking water and hydro power for some cities. Precipitation patterns are changing, leading to too much water in some areas, and therefore flooding and not enough water in other areas leading to drought. Drought can mean a lack of drinking water and can lower agricultural production. Changes in the climate can affect plants and animals.  For example, the melting Arctic ice is having a negative effect on polar bears, Animals may be forced to migrate into new areas, and harmful species may spread beyond their normal range. Climate change can affect the entire food chain.

Some countries have addressed the issue of climate change through the Kyoto Accord. This was an international treaty in which the signatories agreed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions if other countries did the same. The current Kyoto round asks for emission reductions of 6% in Canada and 5% in the USA. Canada is one of the top polluters in the world. The government has done little work to reduce global warming.

If the government is unwilling to do something about Canada’s role in global warming, ordinary citizens must do their part by taking actions such as driving less, consuming less, planting trees, and demanding action. If our climate is keep changing, there will be damage to our environment and therefore unhealthy lives for human beings in the years to come.

To slow down climate change, more ecology-friendly sources of power must be used. These include solar power and wind power. Electricity from solar power could be used in houses, factories and even cars. Wind power can generate electricity for similar purposes.

As well, emissions of greenhouse gases must be reduced. This can be done by lowering consumption and increasing the efficiency of cars, factories and other sources of greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, deforestation must be slowed and more trees must be planted because a healthy environment is necessary for the future sustainability.

Thank you very much for reading my research paper.

I would like to meet with you, if ever you are in Ottawa. I would appreciate some feedback on my research paper.
